| Description: |
The elevators were built in 1898 and owned by a company from Chicago. Originally, grain was stored in the elevators, brought from the west by ship and taken east by train. In 1945, the elevators were in the process of being torn down. Wood that had built up the interior of the elevators was salvaged during the demolition, and was being stored beside them. The wood acted as kindling, and the fire soon destroyed what was left of the elevators. |
