Logging Operations

The Skidway

Available Images: Full Size
Accession Number: Ca1610
Category: Lumbering; Logging Operations
Description: A "decking line" was used to pile logs onto the sleighs. One end of the chain would be attached to the log, and the other to the horse. A pulley, on the top of the vertical pole at right, allowed the log to be pulled up the two smooth logs resting against the pile, behind the horse. The two men at left were called "senders," and would ensure the logs were square to the poles. The "toploader," standing on top of the pile, organized the logs once they were on the top.
