Logging Operations

The Sandhill

Available Images: Full Size
Accession Number: JBM177
Category: Lumbering; Logging Operations
Description: Young men would clear roads through the bush leading to log dumps. Hills along the roadway were covered in a layer of sand to prevent the horses from slipping down the hill. A "Sand piper", posted beside the hill, would heat the sand and spread it on the hill. The job was always delicate -- too much sand would prevent the sleighs from sliding; too little would prevent the sleighs from slowing down on the hill.
