Available Images: Full Size
Accession Number: 1998-127-1
Category: Lumbering; The River Drive
Description: Lumbermen balance on a log in a river. Trying to roll each other off a log is called "birling." The men wore special boots with small nails or "caulks" in the soles that helped keep their grip. The drivers are using pike poles to push the logs into the water and to keep them moving.
