Mining

McGown Mine

Available Images: Full Size
Accession Number: JBM494
Category: Other Industry; Mining
Description: The mine was opened in 1894, when a small vein of gold was found near a lake south of town. Not much gold was found, and the mine was sold to a company searching for copper. It was rumoured the largest amount of copper was right under the lake, and the only way to access it was to drain the lake, a nearly impossible task.
